Mushrooms represent a good part of the causes of death by poisoning in Italy. Indeed, many are those who venture into picking these particular fruits, without really knowing all the different specialties and therefore without knowing how to distinguish a poisonous mushroom from a non-harmful one. Even at European level, the cases are very high, according to the latest estimate, confirmed poisonings would reach 10,000 people per year with around 300 deaths.

These are truly alarming figures, say consumer protection associations across the continent. However, it should be noted that many of these patients were indirectly involved: many reported food poisoning following the consumption of mushrooms purchased at the supermarket or in various shops. These are packaged mushrooms which, according to the label, must be picked up by competent personnel or are cultivated products.

From what emerges from some interviews, many people who have heard news similar to this have decided not to eat mushrooms anymore, for fear of ending up in hospital or, in the worst case, suffer anaphylactic shock and die. This position of consumers has put many production companies in crisis which, in addition to having experienced an obvious drop in sales, have had to face the numerous sanctions which have been pronounced by the competent bodies following the reports drawn up by the consumers. .

The same companies involved in the scandals say that the checks carried out punctually along the production chain are really numerous, but often a small oversight is enough to alter the whole production and cause damage of this kind. The lawyers who have been hired to defend them have expressly indicated that the companies in question have taken note of what has happened and that they will intensify prevention and control activities from planting to planting. preservation of the final product.

The consumer protection associations express themselves strongly embittered, because they denounce intolerable errors of the kind that have often cost human lives. They go on to state that it is not enough to sanction the companies involved, but that all those realities, small or large, which cause the death of people must be closed. The leaders of these associations are convinced that such an operation would make companies more aware of not making mistakes of this kind and, at the same time, consumers would regain the confidence they lost in this food.
