According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director has requested a budget of $ 100 million for the film – a figure that indicates that his next project will have a production scale slightly smaller than the previous ones.
Additionally, Nolan demanded absolute creative control, 20% of the film’s box office, and a six-week hiatus (three before the premiere and three weeks after) where Universal Pictures will be banned from releasing any other theatrical production.
The last measure in question is aimed at preserving the performance of your movie on the big screen, without direct competition with another project from the same studio. This period guarantees your film an exclusive window of at least 100 days in theaters.
Besides Universal, other studios have tried to contract with the filmmaker, including Paramount, Apple and Sony. However, neither company was willing to comply with all of Nolan’s demands.
The upcoming production is based on his screenplay on J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
A theoretical physicist who became director of the Los Alamos laboratory, Oppenheimer led the research and development of the bomb that ended WWII, as part of what was secretly known as the Manhattan Project. Nolan will produce the film alongside his wife and longtime production partner Emma Thomas.
