Robert KingThe work focused on the nomadic lifestyle which has become the survival option for many
Launched in 2020 with great success, Nomadland tackled a lifestyle that has become the most viable option for many: nomadism. Set in 2011, the plot follows Fern after his town collapsed due to the shutdown of the largest local industry (and main employer) while traveling to different parts of the country in search of temporary jobs.
Armed only with her trailer, she meets several people on her journey who in one way or another have been affected by the economy and are now looking for all means to survive. Thus, director and screenwriter Chloé Zhao paints a portrait of a minimalist lifestyle based mainly on the loneliness of those who are in constant movement, even when they are members of mobile communities (called caravans).
In an interview with Wendy Mitchell for Chloe Zhao’s story on her journey to bring “ Nomadland ” to the big screen, for the Screendaily portal, the filmmaker said the importance of a certain feeling to the film’s end result. . “I like to make films that seem open, where people can get what they need… For me, I take away that importance of loneliness. From our birth we are constantly defined by the society we live in, the family, the community – so what happens when all that noise goes away and you are alone?… ”
Mobile life is at the epicenter of Fern’s plot
The point is that nomadism, or rather internal migratory flows, as a way of life has become a preferable trend in the economic downturn scenario in many countries, mainly in the West. Initially motivated by the effects of the 2008 crisis, it is currently the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting mainly from the preventive measures necessary to halt proliferation, which govern the flow of people in the affected countries.
This new configuration allowed an increase never seen before among the so-called digital nomads; term that identifies employees or workers in general who perform their duties remotely and using electronic equipment. In will Covid-19 unleash a new generation of digital nomads? published in the Oxford Business Group, a conclusion was drawn about the possibility that digital nomadism is the new normal.
“With Covid-19 facilitating a new change related to remote working, the phenomenon of digital nomadism is expected to continue to grow in the years to come, as companies give up having more expensive spaces and employees and employers alike are more and more used to working. remotely “.

Digital nomadism has been a cheap option for businesses
However, the issue of national migratory flows has long been an analytical factor in demographic surveys. Variations between states in the availability of jobs have traditionally been the compelling factor that motivates individuals to travel long distances between their home country and a new location.
In 2019, the article Internal Migration in Times of Crisis in Brazil was launched, signed by Professors Ednelson Mariano Dota and Silvana Nunes de Queiroz, for the Brazilian Journal of Urban and Regional Studies in which the necessary economic framework that encourages the nomadism of a society is analyzed from one location to another within the Brazilian framework.
“However, in the second period (2011-2015), the slowdown caused by the economic crisis in recent years represented a considerable reduction in the balance of vacancies created in Brazil, which went from positive throughout the series to vacant positions or negative balance in 2015 (-1.6 million)… So, given this scenario of weak economic growth coupled with the increase in unemployment in the country, how did the national migratory dynamic behave? Has the intensity / volume of migration increased or decreased? Is long-distance (inter-regional) migration continuing to cool and is medium-distance (intraregional) and short-distance (intra-state) migration increasing? “
As society adapts to the new reality and grapples with the market downturn, in addition to the scarcity of opportunities, there is a noticeable increase in the preference of some groups for the itinerant lifestyle. Not only from them, but also from the digital version of nomadism, which may well be the new trend in the job market. The point is, no matter how many millennia have passed, one of the oldest habits of humanity is still very much present; both in everyday life and in fiction.
