According to Deadline, Netflix and Universal Pictures hired actor and director Ron Yuan to direct the sequel to “47 Ronins,” a 2013 action movie starring Keanu Reeves.
For those who don’t know, Yuan was the director of “She Dances, I Dance 6”, and was seen as Sergeant Qiant in the live-action “Mulan”.
In an interview, the star said he was excited to work with the studio and explore the different genres of the production.
“I’m really excited to be working with Universal and the production team on this film which mixes different genres including martial arts, action, horror and cyberpunk. It will be a fun, intense and emotional journey for audiences around the world. “

Aimee Garcia and AJ Mendez will script the sequel.
Garcia is best known for playing Ella Lopez in the supernatural series ‘Lucifer’, while Mendez has successfully grown from a career as a WWE champion wrestler to screenwriter.

The duo launched Scrappy Heart Productions last year and have so far collaborated on several comic book projects, including a DC ‘Wonder Woman’ season starting in July this year.
Here’s what the pair had to say in response to the news:
“AJ and I are excited to write a diverse and inclusive action film,” Garcia said in a statement. “Director Ron Yuan’s vision of combining martial arts, horror, cyber-punk and action was inspiring and we would like to thank the team for their support.”
As of yet, there aren’t many details on the sequel except that the plot will take place 300 years after the original and will have a cyberpunk look.
Still no first forecasts, production should start at the end of 2021.
The original feature film was directed by Carl Rinsch, from a screenplay by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini, and failed critics and audiences alike.
Budgeted at US $ 175 million, the feature film grossed just US $ 151.8 million worldwide. At Rotten Tomatoes, he got a meager 16% approval rating.
The plot follows Kai (Keanu Reeves), a rejected samurai who crosses medieval Japan to join 46 other samurai in an effort to defeat the mighty Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano), responsible for the death of a respected master samurai.
