Migrant smuggling in Sicily. Caltanissetta State Police, during preliminary investigations, coordinated by the local prosecutor’s office, Anti-Mafia District Directorate, executed 18 personal custody orders, 12 in prison and 6 in house arrest, ordered by the judge of instruction for association of criminals aiming at the facilitation of the clandestine immigration.

According to what has been reconstructed, the smugglers’ boats would have left the port of Gela or the coast of Agrigento to reach Tunisia and return immediately with the migrants. The price of the foot of the sea, paid in cash before departure, would have been between 3,000 and 5,000 euros. The profit of the criminal organization for the illicit traffic set up would amount to between 30,000 and 70,000 euros for each trip.
