The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is in the hemicycle for the programmatic declarations of the government, today October 25. Tomorrow, October 26, it will be in the Senate. Aside from the majority vote of confidence which revolves around FdI, Lega and Forza Italia.
At the end of the general debate, the president will accept the reply. What Meloni is presenting to the hemicycle is a “strongly political” government which aims to last 5 years. After the bell ceremony on October 23 with Mario Draghi and the face-to-face international debut with Emmanuel Macron, it is now time for Italy’s first female Prime Minister to show “how to follow up and concretely implement the commitments “.

The meeting point is at 11 in Montecitorio. The prime minister – Meloni has made it clear he wants us to talk about the role played by men – will stand the first real test in parliament, where he can still count on a solid majority. And he will make a “broad” speech, which will touch on all the fundamental questions. From the condemnation of Russia for the war in Ukraine, to relations with Europe, to urgent economic recipes against the crisis and expensive energy in particular.
Melons and discontinuity
Giorgia Meloni will also address the subject of women and what it will mean to deny to women a power held until now only by men will be a crucial passage in her speech to MEPs. The center-right coalition will have to indicate, through the intermediary of the Prime Minister, how to achieve, in fact, this discontinuity claimed also in the naming of the key ministries. As we know, in fact, some ministries have new names: energy security, food sovereignty, birth rate, merit, made in Italy. And he will not miss a passage on “rights”, a question that came back to the fore right after the meeting with Macron.

Support for Ukraine and gas
Italy’s international position, as Meloni has repeatedly stated, will remain firmly anchored to the Euro-Atlantic axis. And there will be no setbacks on support for Ukraine, even with other weapons if necessary. But the most complicated and urgent game remains that of gas supply. Winter is upon us and Italy is about to ration itself. On gas, it will be difficult for the prime minister to deviate from the path traced by Mario Draghi and his minister Roberto Cingolani, who remains an adviser to the centre-right government.
Decree of law, then maneuver
Giorgia Meloni will defend this choice which has raised perplexity, not only among the opposition. However, this will likely mark a distance on the production and supply front. In Brussels, Italy can only continue to fight to obtain the gas price cap and the solidarity displayed in the time of Covid. All with the aim of having resources to protect citizens and businesses from continued increases. A new decree-law will probably be the first concrete commitment of the Meloni government. In the process, the executive will have to take care of the drafting of the maneuver for the finance law. And he will have to do it in record time.
