Pixar’s latest film “Lightyear” hits theaters this weekend and promises to explore the origins of beloved “Toy Story” character Buzz Lightyear. This film is the science fiction that Andy’s toy was based on, described by the directors as Andy’s “Star Wars”.
“Toy Story’s” ties to “Lightyear” are clear, but the film doesn’t receive the same positive critical reception as previous installments in the franchise. ‘Lightyear’ has received good reviews so far, but not as positive as the four ‘Toy Story’ ones.
‘Lightyear’ has a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. And indeed, it’s a great score by any standard, but it seems weak when compared to “Toy Story.”
The first two “Toy Story” movies have perfect 100% scores on Rotten, which means all of the reviews for them have been positive. ‘Toy Story 3’ is 98% on the site, while ‘Toy Story 4’ has an average of 97%.

“Lightyear” may not score as high as other “Toy Story” movies, but it still upholds Pixar’s tradition of acclaimed driving. “Cars 2,” released over a decade ago, is the only film in Pixar history to receive a negative rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with just 39% overall.
