How to Create Extra Space in Your Home

Extra Space

There is not much worse than feeling overwhelmed in your home. Amongst the kids’ mountain of toys that have nowhere to go or the furniture that takes up most of the room, it can feel hard to catch a breath. This means it is time to get creative and find some extra space so you can relax.

Don’t panic, though. Creating extra space doesn’t necessarily mean knocking down walls or moving to a bigger place entirely. Instead, with a little bit of help from some clever tips and tricks, you can maximize the space you already have.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at how you can create some extra space in your home.

Clear Out That Clutter

The first step to creating more space is to declutter. Many people have items they no longer need or use that take up precious space. Take a day to sort through your stuff and donate, sell, or throw out things so you can claim back some of your room. You might just be surprised at how much space you can free up by removing clutter.

Utilize Vertical Space

The walls are not often thought of as a storage space, but that is where some people go wrong! This is an excellent area for installing shelves, floating furniture such as bookcases which can hold personal items as well as books, and using hooks to hang up coats, bags and hats so you can free up storage in your closet and get things off the floor. Doing this can help you have more floor space for the things that can’t be put anywhere else, such as pieces of furniture.

Get Sneaky with Storage

Sometimes you have to look for places that could offer you extra storage, even where you might least expect it. One of the easiest options is investing in furniture that can double up at storage. Key items such as ottomans can give you a huge space to use while being completely out of sight. What’s more, beds that have built-in storage underneath are also an excellent unsuspecting option. Furniture pieces like these will allow you to stash all of your items away in a place that is easily accessible without taking up any extra room.

Take Advantage of Underutilized Areas

If there are any areas in your home that could be used for extra space or storage, now is the time to seek them out. It is time to get creative. For example, you can transform the space under your stairs into a cosy reading nook or a mini home office. Convert an unused closet into a small home gym or a storage area. Additionally, you could use your untouched loft for an extra room and install loft ladders so you can use the space when you need it.

Embrace Multi-Functional Furniture

When you are tight on space, it is best to find pieces of furniture that can double up as something else or serve multiple purposes. Every piece of furniture in your room should count to maximize space. For example, a dining table that can double as a workspace or a sofa bed that can be used as a spare bed for guests. By opting for multi-functional furniture, you can maximize the usefulness of each item while minimizing the space they occupy, a win-win!
