Hypercholesterolemia, which exceeds 240 mg/dl, is a pathology that increasingly affects both men and women equally. It is a fatty molecule involved in many metabolic processes in our body, such as digestion, the production of Vitamin D, but above all it is essential for the construction of the cell wall, in particular the cells that make up the nervous system. In addition, cholesterol is very important for our hormones: it is a good precursor of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen.

This molecule moves inside our body using blood as a medium and lipoproteins as special carriers which tend to differ in physical characteristics such as density and size. But in addition to all these functions, cholesterol is the main constituent of atherosclerotic plaques, which clog the arteries by depositing on their walls. In this case, it is low density lipoproteins, better known as bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol.

This condition is often associated with a strong development of cardiovascular diseases or pathologies. Every year the number of deaths from this pathology is increasing, mainly due to stroke or heart attack. As for the good cholesterol, or HDL, it is made up of high density lipoproteins and therefore, as its name suggests, it does not affect the walls of our arteries, but rather takes care of releasing them by transporting all the waste substances to the liver.

Many believe that these diseases only affect a segment of the population, mainly those over fifty, but this is not the case at all. There are really many cases of children and, in the case of genetic transmission also in children, who have what is called “familial hypercholesterolemia”. It is therefore a transmission of the vertical type which also implies that the child adapts to a correct and balanced diet, avoiding foods with a high fat content.

Indeed, nutritionists advise patients suffering from hypercholesterolemia to base their diet mainly on fiber: thus all kinds of vegetables are welcome, such as zucchini, pumpkins, eggplants, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Obviously, it is also possible to eat meat and fish, but paying attention to how they are prepared: it is better to opt for steaming or grilling, avoiding fries more than once a day. week. In addition, pay attention to the doses of oil used for seasoning: we recommend only one spoon per dish.
