Some researchers claim to have found a drug that they call “miraculous” for all patients with cholesterol, especially bad cholesterol (LDL). Just two injections a year with this new drug would even be enough to halve the amount of cholesterol in the blood. It is a drug capable of considerably reducing cardiovascular risks which, in just one year, cause the death of approximately 220,000 patients with a clinical picture already compromised but not only.
It is a drug that the Italian Medicines Agency has recently approved and which, therefore, in a few months it could already be given to the first patients. According to medical researchers, this is a drug whose booster dose should be given about three months later. Of course, patients should always monitor their blood cholesterol levels and follow a diet.
A fundamental note is that the Italian medicine company has declared that, for the beneficiaries, the reimbursement of the medicine will be guaranteed: it will therefore not cost a single euro to the patients to treat. The costs, which are quite low, will be entirely borne by the national health system. It is a drug whose experimentation took place only on adults and who suffer from primary hypercholesterolemia. The therapy involves the use of small RNA molecules that prevent the formation of cholesterol.
These molecules have a great affinity with the liver: inside it is able to produce a protein called PCSK9, involved in cholesterol metabolism. This protein would be able to reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Once approved, this molecule was the protagonist of a series of innovative studies for atherosclerotic diseases.
This new medicine must be prescribed by a medical specialist: the line continues with the administration, which can be carried out in complete safety by a healthcare professional or a nurse via a subcutaneous puncture. Cardiologists are also very enthusiastic and have noted a significant reduction in treatment times. In fact, it is only two administrations per year which therefore simplifies therapies that last for years and are difficult to maintain. However, experts recommend doing the usual routine tests before proceeding with the administration and, above all, checking with an expert in the field to better understand if the therapy is adaptable to our body.
