Since “Avengers: Ultimatum” fans of Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) have been delighted that the hero will be the new Captain America after receiving the shield from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
However, Mackie told the comics that he was not sure whether to wear the shield at the end of the “Hawk and the Winter Soldier” series.
“We never talked about it when the idea for the show came up. It was more a question of who should get the shield: Sam or Bucky (Sebastian Stan)? Also because Sam doesn’t accept the shield in ‘Avengers: Ultimatum’. He said to Steve, “Looks like it belongs to someone else.” So at no point did Sam get excited or anxious about becoming Captain America. “
He continued:
“So Kevin [Feige] said to me, “We don’t know what’s going on, so the show is going to explore more of the idea or legacy of Captain America, not exactly Sam becoming Captain America.” So I was really confused when I left this meeting. I admit I hated the idea, I thought it would be something terrible.
In the end, it was obvious that Feige, Marvel’s Creative Director, was simply avoiding giving Mackie the answers.
The series was so successful that a “Captain America 4” is planned, with Mackie in the lead role and the return of Malcolm Spellman as a screenwriter.
