Robert KingOver the past few days, the Academy of Phonographic Arts and Sciences announced the list of nominees for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards and, as usual, there were many surprises and several rebuffs in the award categories.
It’s no surprise that the iconic Beyoncé topped the categories, earning no less than nine nominations, including Album of the Year for “Renaissance” and Song & Record of the Year for “Break My Soul.” Adele also came as no surprise by appearing with seven nominations, also included in the aforementioned three. Meanwhile, we can’t turn our eyes to some names that did well in 2022 and didn’t even come close to getting major section nominations.
One such example was ROSALÍA. Although she topped the Latin Grammy list, taking home the main prize of the night, the Catalan singer-songwriter was snubbed in the Album of the Year category, even though she released the famous and well-known loved ‘MOTOMAMI’, which became the highest rated of 2022 and featured a different and hybrid sound with several genres from the mainstream scene and other very experimental forays. Not even “Saoko,” one of the main songs on the compilation, was remembered in Song of the Year and Record of the Year, limiting it to Latin categories and Best Musical Film.
Similarly, the soundtrack to the acclaimed animation ‘Encanto’ also failed to make the expected noise. Although acclaimed by experts around the world and having huge commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard 200, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s compositions have been swept under the rug and placed in the sections dedicated to visual media – always worthy of mention for Album of the Year. What we got was a nomination for Best Song for Visual Media for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which has a good chance of winning, even though it faces fierce competition from Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Billie Eilish.
Legendary rapper Nicki Minaj is another who has once again gone unnoticed by Grammy voters. After releasing the excellent “Super Freaky Girl”, which became her first solo No. 1 on the Hot 100, she commented on her dissatisfaction with the Academy deciding to change the song from rap to pop and, at the end, we couldn’t remember anything. Category. We must speak of the snobbery of Britney Spears and Elton John, even as they fell into the graces of the public to mark the return of the princess of pop to music.
Take the time to watch:
In the Breakthrough Artist category, we had Anitta confirmed as one of the favorites to take home the award, but forgetting Dove Cameron, who transformed her own image, is unforgivable. After all, not only did she enjoy considerable commercial success, but she also delivered some of the best songs of the year, including “Boyfriend” and “Bad Idea.”
On the other hand, it is necessary to mention the nice surprises of the list, one of them being the strong presence of the iconic Swedish group ABBA. With the famous “Voyage”, the group was nominated for the album of the year and the best pop vocal album, while the song “Don’t Shut Me Down” was remembered in the categories of the disc of the year and Best Duo Vocal Performance. /Group (a very welcome acknowledgment, given that the group has never indulged in Academy voters in the past). Kim Petras and Sam Smith also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group for “Unholy,” which rocketed them to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and brought immense trans and non-binary representation into the mainstream. dominant.
Doja Cat was another who earned multiple nominations for the award, a remarkable feat considering she also did well last year. Her song, ‘Woman’, appeared in three categories, including Record of the Year, while ‘Vegas’, the theme song to ‘Elvis’, was nominated for Best Rap Performance – despite not appearing not unfairly in the visual media sections. Lizzo earned an Album of the Year nomination for the big ‘Special’, while lead single ‘About Damn Time’ appeared in Record of the Year and Song of the Year, having chances. to give the commendable artist more gramophone gold. And the legendary Mary J. Blige was honored with nominations for Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Good Morning Gorgeous” and the self-titled debut single.
Remember that the winners will be announced on February 05, 2023.
