Godzilla vs Kong Special | Which films to watch to understand the clash of the Titans?

Scheduled to depart in March 2020, Godzilla vs. Kong suffered a launch delay in 2019 for reshoots, given the box office failure that is Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (2019).

With the pandemic, the film was postponed until 2021 and was even questioned by Netflix in an attempt to launch it directly into streaming. Now the film is finally hitting theaters nationwide this Thursday 6.

In the midst of all this controversy, only one thing matters to fans: seeing the two most famous monsters in cinema crash.

Thinking of these guys, CinePOP has separated which movies and where you can find them. Check!

Released in 2014, MonsterVerse is a Legendary Pictures co-production with Warner and Toho (in the Godzilla films). This partnership between the United States, Japan, China and Mexico aimed to revive the great Kaijus (giant monsters) films in theaters. For that, nothing better than to start with the king of the monsters. However, we recommend that you follow the movie timeline, not in the order of release.

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Set in the 1970s, Kong: Skull Island breaks with the character’s classic past. Instead of taking the gorilla to town, all the action takes place in the estates of Ilha da Skullira. This time, in the midst of the Vietnam War, the United States government sends a team of military personnel to map a mysterious island in the South Pacific. Along with the soldiers are scientists, a businessman, a tracker and a photojournalist. The trip is hectic and they end up being trapped on Skull Island. Amid fights and disagreements, they are subjected to lizards, giant oxen, spiders, and all manner of gigantic deadly animals … including Kong, a young mountain-sized gorilla whose parents have been killed by the “SkullCrawlers” lizards. Lost and aimless, it’s now up to the human cast to try to survive and escape the island. Unlike the other versions, which had a sci-fi twist, Kong: Skull Island is an action movie. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly and John Goodman, the film introduces the young version of King Kong and further explores the mysterious Skull Island. As well as flirting with suspense and terror, the movie helps open up the MonsterVerse and already hints that the gorilla’s relationship with the giant lizards isn’t the best. Note: There is a post-credits scene.

Where to watch: Netflix.

Godzilla (2014)

Enjoy watching:

After the monstrous failure to attempt to Americanize Godzilla in 1998, the monster has spent more than 20 years away from the big screen. Then, to launch MonsterVerse, King of the Monsters returned to theaters under the command of hitherto independent director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One). Inspired by Tubarão (1975), the film hides Godzilla as much as it can and works a lot on the tension around the appearance of the monster, creating an atmosphere of interesting and engaging suspense. Thus, when he appears, the public values and feels his actions of destruction. In the plot, the MUTOS (Unidentified Earth Mass Organisms) begin to attack Earth while attempting to meet to consume the mating. In an attempt to kill the creatures, the military launches nuclear warheads. But, what should solve the problem, ended up awakening another force of nature: Gojira (or Godzilla). Starring Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins and Andy Serkis, who does the motion capture of Godzilla, the film was the first in the universe to be released, but it is the second film to be viewed chronologically. order.

Where to watch: Netflix.

Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (2019)

Released in 2019 under a lot of expectations, Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters ended up disappointing as it’s a really long movie that spends a lot of time with human characters, while the fucking between the Kaijus, which is what it all. everyone wants to see, let’s face it, didn’t have as much space as we would like. However, when the monsters appear … Take the children out of the room! Starring four of the most famous monsters in movie history – Godzilla, Queen Mothra, Rodan, and alien Ghidorah – the film features some of the genre’s most memorable showdown scenes. The plot is fairly straightforward. Amid the debate over what to do with monsters, a scientist creates sonar that allows humans to communicate with creatures. However, she ends up being kidnapped along with her daughter and begins the awakening of the Kaijus. In an attempt to stop them, the US government summons her husband, who is one of the world’s foremost experts in predatory behavior, to work with them in the process of finding such sonar. Obviously, they can’t get there in time and the biggest monsters on the planet are starting to roam around destroying everything. Among them, Kong, who is cited but not shown. Despite the destruction, the film justifies these creatures as forces of nature and tells how their actions are fundamental to the rebirth of nature. In other words, a large portion of them end up functioning as anti-heroes. Ah, it’s good to remember that this movie has a post-credit scene that’s fundamental to the Godzilla vs. Kong plot.

Where to watch: HBO GO.

Movies that are NOT part of MonsterVerse

King Kong (2005)

Directed by Peter Jackson, taking credit for commissioning the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this film was distributed by Universal and is a 1930s remake. The plot bears no relation to Warner’s MonsterVerse, so it doesn’t You don’t have to look to understand Godzilla vs Kong. However, he has a very interesting curiosity. Andy Serkis, who captures the motion capture of MonsterVerse’s Godzilla was tasked with capturing King Kong’s motion in 2005. In case you want to watch this movie, while it won’t influence this year’s game, it is. available on Netflix.

Ring of Fire (2013)

Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, this great action film about giant robots used as a protective measure against Kaijus attacks from a rift in the ocean, was a critical success for bringing quality action, incredible effects, of comedy and to pay a great tribute to the classic Japanese monster movies. Although it was released by Warner in partnership with Legendary Pictures (the same partnership as MonsterVerse), this film is unfortunately not part of the same universe as Godzilla and Kong. At the time of launch, fans were waiting very hard for this crossover to happen, but it will only be left at will. The first Circle of Fire is available on Telecine.

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017 and 2018)

Produced in partnership with Toho and Netflix, this trilogy produced in 3D animation with traces of anime is a beautiful tribute to the mythology of the Kaijus. They involve the classic enemies of the King of the Monsters, a type of time travel, and even the Mechagodzilla. It has no involvement in the world of cinemas, but it is a very interesting work for fans of the genre.

Ring of Fire: The Uprising (2018)

Not to mention Del Toro’s return to directing, the 2013 film’s streak isn’t part of the universe either. And look, luckily not. With no plans for a sequel, the franchise was acquired by Universal, who quickly attempted to make this continuation. With John Boyega, the Finnish Star Wars, Circle of Fire: The Uprising is a disaster. Looking like a renegade brother from the second Transformers trilogy, everything in the movie is generic and uninspired. In the plot, years after the events of the first film, the Jaeger program has been reactivated and new recruits are training. In this, the Kaijus find a way back to Earth. And, well, that’s it. Between a bunch of CGI and another, the movie even tries to conjure up a new idea, but it’s executed so poorly that it becomes a shame. The movie is so bad, but so bad that it even manages to destroy the good things the original had built. If you still want to watch this movie, it is available in the Netflix catalog.

Godzilla vs Kong opens on March 26, 2021 in the United States and the day before in Brazil.
