A Karl Lagerfeld biopic was recently announced and will star Jared Leto as the Kaiser of fashion. The Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club performer will also produce the film. But are we sure he is the most appropriate choice?
Jared Leto has a lot of style to sell, so much so that he’s considered a fashion icon in his own right. Instinctively, therefore, one would think that no one else, apart from him, could play the role of Karl Lagerfeld in a biopic dedicated to him. And indeed it will be so. To report the news, which in a short time spread like wildfire, were Variety and WWD. Leto, as already announced, in addition to playing the role of designer and creative director of Chanel from 1983 to 2019, the year of his death, will also serve as executive producer. With him, also the collaborators of Lagerfeld: Pier Paolo Righi, Caroline Lebar and Sébastien Jondeau. Nevertheless, the various ups and downs of Jared Leto’s acting career in recent years are unfortunately known to all: so is it a good choice to entrust him with this project?
Jared Leto Will Be Karl Lagerfield In A Future Biopic: Why It Might Not Work
“Karl has always been an inspiration to me. – said Jared Leto recently, continuing – He was a real multifaceted, an artist, a leader and, above all, a kind man. When we joined the team of Karl Lagerfeld, we immediately shared the creative version of rendering a respectful ode to Karl while pushing the artistic boundaries of what a biopic can be.” Since rising to fame, Jared Leto has successfully joined his music career, as the voice of Thirty Seconds to Mars, that of acting, from which he derived great satisfaction. In 2014, he also received the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role thanks to Dallas Buyers Club, by Jean-Marc Vallee: Since then, however, something seems to have gone wrong.
His curriculum begins to be enriched with performances that are anything but flattering, including the much criticized Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and the most recent Morbius, by Daniel Espinosa, crushed by critics and the public. Moreover, between the two titles mentioned, there is one that has probably made him the target of the fiercest opinions from spectators, namely the role of Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. In the role – very creative – of the cousin of Maurizio Gucci, Jared Leto offered one of his performances, according to many, the worst of all time. In addition to the prosthetic make-up considered unrealistic, the characterization of the character, excessively extravagant, bordering on buffoonery and the grotesque, aroused strong criticism.
And always the same semantic juxtaposition, fashion, compared to the biopic centered on the famous German stylist and photographer, suggests this same “disaster”. But it is still too early to consider it. But Jared Leto assured WWD, “My role is to portray it on screen in the most honest way possible.”
