The brilliant docu-series about the Lakers and how they came to be the engaging team they are has taken the audience by surprise and left us wanting more. Based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, the first two seasons of Winning Time on HBO and the streaming service Max attracted a devoted fan base.
The 1980s Los Angeles Lakers’ life and on-court exploits are dramatized in the series. The first season of Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty centers on the 1979–1980 NBA season, while the second season, which covers the years from 1980 to 1984, follows Magic Johnson’s ascent to the top of the league. We all are excited to know whether the Winning Time season 3 will happen.

Winning Time Season 3 Release Date Speculation
The show Winning Time has been canceled by HBO, in a decision that comes as a surprise and heartbreak to many of the devoted watchers. The showrunner Max Bornstein released the sad news through a post, stating, “Not the ending we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love.”
The reasons for this have been many, according to the studio, due to its lack of viewing numbers and sharp fall from the previous numbers of the initial season. The show in itself, if planned to release, would’ve been completed sometime around mid-2024, so we could’ve expected a season 3 by late 2024 or early 2025.
What To Expect From Winning Time Season 3?
The show covered the rise and fall and ultimate journey of the team Lakers, and season 3 would’ve expanded on that, and the season followed the Lakers through 1984, even though the second season finale wasn’t until September 17, 2023. The Lakers faced Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in a rematch to end the 1984–85 season, and they prevailed to win their third championship under the Magic Johnson Showtime era.
Viewers found the cancelation of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty all the more painful because the narrative of the third season if it is ever renewed, would follow some of the most thrilling years in Showtime’s history. We were quite literally, denied the best time of the era, and that’s what has left the viewers with a sense of unfulfilled feeling.
Winning Time Season 3 Cast & Characters
Since the show Winning Time covered an era of players, there is not much change to be had in the cast. Moreover, the cast in itself is such a brilliant group of young and experienced actors who made a sure mark on us with their remarkable acting.
The show, therefore, if made for season 3, would’ve also had much of the same cast. This means that actors would take on their previous roles, such as the following.
- John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss
- Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson
- Jason Clarke as Jerry West
- Adrien Brody as Pat Riley
- Gaby Hoffmann as Claire Rothman
- Jason Segel as Paul Westhead
- Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss
- DeVaughn Nixon as Norm Nixon
- Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Despite the cancellation, we still hope to see their wonderful acting elsewhere.
Conclusion
Winning Time season 3 is not happening, and despite the dissatisfaction at how it ended the numbers have not been enough to demand another season. The show itself was full of heart, of the ups and downs of such a team, and we would gladly take a season 3 if we could get it. What are your opinions about the show? Let us know in the comments.
