Dwayne Johnson Strongly Advocated For ‘Black Adam’ To Get A SOLO Movie

“Black Adam,” an adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson, has finally hit theaters around the world after 15 years in development.

While promoting the feature film, the actor revealed that the titular character’s origin story was originally part of a movie combined with “Shazam!” featuring Zachary Levi – following in the footsteps of the original comics, but according to Johnson, a counterproductive move.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson revealed that he strongly advocated for Black Adam to have his own origin story, separate from Shazam (which is why the project was delayed).

“When the first draft of the film came to us, it was a combination of ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam!’ I just knew in my gut: ‘We can’t make this movie like that. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice. It would have been good for Shazam to have two origin stories converging in one movie, but it’s not good for Black Adam,” he said.

Johnson continues, “I made a call… And I said, ‘I have to share what I think here. It’s quite unpopular…’. Because everyone was like, ‘Hey, the script is awesome, let’s do this movie. And I said, ‘I really think you should do ‘Shazam!’, make a movie of your own in whatever tone you want. And I think we should part ways [‘Adão Negro’]”.

Check out the main comments:

“The effects are fake and weightless even for this sort of thing, and the risks are non-existent” – The Playlist.

“Dwayne Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra try to come up with a grand unified DC theory, blending familiar movie tropes with a protagonist who kills people on the spot. The result is sometimes a mess, but overall it’s fun” – Empire.

“There’s not a single character here that doesn’t look like a cheap photocopy of Gotham or the MCU” – indieWire.

“It’s fun and never dull, but it’s also wise to move fast enough to distract viewers from the questions it raises” – United Press International.

“[O filme] is packed with undeveloped characters and an inordinate number of repetitive action scenes, so much so that its incomplete discussion of what it means to be a hero gets lost in all the noise” – IGN Movies.

Nearly 5,000 years after being gifted with the omnipotent powers of the Egyptian gods – and just as quickly arrested – Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

The film will also star Justice Society members Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Crusher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (‘Águas Rasas’), the feature film will take place in the same universe as ‘Shazam!’.
