For 13 seasons, the famous TV movie starred Terence Hill, then something changed and the handsome Raoul Bova arrived in his place. The reason for the change in helm was not known, until a recent interview released by Hill explaining the truth about the real reason behind his farewell to his cassocked character.
Don Matteo from the beginning to today
The first episode of Don Matteo aired on January 7, 2000 on Rai Uno and from there it never stopped, reaching 13 seasons still sharing at biblical levels (to stay on topic). Don Matteo is an Italian television series in which, in each episode, the stories of Don Matteo are told, interpreted by Terence Hill, who investigates the unsolved cases that occur in the country.
Matteo, thanks to his intelligence and insight, manages to lead his double life as a priest and an investigator, thus helping his friend Cecchini and, if you will, the entire Carabinieri weapon to solve the most unusual cases. Don Matteo is always surrounded by many friends who help him, such as the perpetual Natalina and the sexton Pippo, who all together make the viewer laugh and worry, who until the end will never know who the culprit will be.

Hill confirmed that he could no longer cope with the heavy paces imposed on him to shoot the series, which is why he simply decided to leave his beloved character and the entire cast who had become family to him.

During the shooting of this last season the days were very long and I slept five hours a night. Beautiful, for heaven’s sake, but also tiring. I would have liked to make fiction four films a year, but Rai said no… They need long series to optimize the costs. After five months I can say that it is the right choice, since in any case I could not have given the character anything else”.
