Netflix has launched the new series from the creators of “Dark”, “1899”, in its catalog and is accused of plagiarism by Brazilian illustrator and cartoonist Mary Cagnin.
The horror series created by Jantje Frize and Baran bo Odar has many similarities with the material of the Brazilian author and seems to have been adapted even visually, with comparative images.
Cagnin exposed on his social networks that several elements of the series had been plagiarized from his comic ‘Black Silence’, published in 2016.
In the thread, Cagnin posted images that compare his work with the show’s look, which looks identical.
“I AM IN SHOCK. The day I found out the 1899 series was just SAME as my Black Silence comic, published in 2016,” she says.
Take the time to watch:
I AM IN SHOCK.
The day I discovered that the 1899 series is just IDENTICAL to my Black Silence comic, published in 2016.

“I’m in shock. I found the 1899 series to be just the same as my Black Silence comic, which came out in 2016. It’s all there: The Black Pyramid. The dead inside the ship/ship. The multinational crew. Seemingly strange and unexplained things. Eye symbols and when they appear. Written codes. The voices that call them. Subtle plot details, such as characters’ personal dramas, including mysterious deaths .

You have to ask yourself: how is this possible? Well, in 2017, I was invited by the Brazilian Embassy to participate in the Gothenburg Book Fair, a very famous and influential international fair in Europe. pic.twitter.com/rwzIJ1sg99

I cried a lot. My dream has always been to be recognized nationally and internationally for my work. And seeing such a thing happen really breaks my heart. We know that in Brazil we have few opportunities to show our work and be recognized for it. pic.twitter.com/FLoNbzTnUy

“I had the opportunity that many comic artists never had: to be able to show my work to an international audience. People. I gave lectures. Talked about the plot. I introduced him to influential people in the area. The matter is serious. Obviously, Black Silence is a short work, almost a short story. It’s very easy, in 12 hours of showing the series, to dilute all these “references”, but the essence of what I created is there.”, HE SAID.
Cagnin even left her comic for people to see and compare the material created by her with the series:
Anyone who wishes can read my comic which is available to read online to draw their own conclusions: https://t.co/owMn85MIal

“Guys, please anyone who has watched the show and read my comic and can help me with the similarity collection, it would help me a lot. Later I will ask for your help to get this case to the media. We cannot think that, just because we are Brazilians, we should accept this kind of disdain and indifference. We have countless cases of gringos who copy us, in films, series and songs. Like in the case of the movie ‘The Adventures of Pi’ which was copied from a Brazilian book,” he said.
Netflix hasn’t commented on the matter, which is expected to have bigger repercussions in the coming days.
I’m tired of crying. Thank you to everyone who has read this far and to all my readers for all the support I get. Countless people in the Insta inbox commenting on the similarities. I will see the steps to follow. If there is anything that can be done.
