While promoting his upcoming movie titled “Dreamland,” “Constantine” director Francias Lawrence commented on the recently announced sequel.
In an interview with The Wrap, the filmmaker revealed that he intended to do an 18+ rated story.
Starring Keanu Reeves in 2005, the first film should also have been rated R, and Lawrence confessed that he very much regretted that the adaptation was made for a target audience under the age of 16.
“All I know is that Keanu, [o roteirista] Akiva [Goldsman] and I always wanted to do it. And now we’ve finally received permission to go ahead and do our version of ‘Constantine’. Before, people were always taking over the character to be part of a shared universe or something on TV or whatever. And now I think people realize there might be an appetite to revisit this version of Keanu.
Although Lawrence, Reeves and Goldsman don’t have a script for the sequel yet, they have already discussed the plot.
Enjoy watching:
“We are committed to planting the seeds of our ideas. Keanu and I have been fighting for a while to make it the way we want it to be. Only now have we overcome the obstacles that held us back and now we must roll up our sleeves and dive in head first. But we have lots of ideas.
He went on to mention the plan of R-rated land.
“One of my biggest frustrations about the first one was that we followed Warner Bros. requirements for violence, blood, language, sexuality and made a 13+ rated movie. But the scene R-rated movie is more acceptable these days. Even back then, if I could, I would have made a ‘Constatine’ for R. It would be a lot scarier and more violent. It would be a movie to traumatize the adults.
This could all come true in the upcoming sequel.
“The idea is that we can do it this time. In my opinion, this is something that fans have always wanted and not a teen movie with one scary scene. Still, Constantine is a humorous character, in a dark way, and I’d like to add more of that sarcastic, cynical sense of humor to the upcoming story.
Until then, it’s worth remembering that “Land of Dreams” will premiere on Netflix on November 18.
