Honest Italian taxpayers won’t be too happy to hear the latest news. In particular, according to the latest news on the Rai fee, it seems that it will remain on the electricity bill also for 2023. The lack of approval from the European Commission for the Bel Paese’s decision to introduce the tax among the Italian families’ utilities were of no use, mostly seen as an inappropriate charge at a time when electricity and gas bills were already skyrocketing.
It was during Renzi’s tenure that the introduction of the Rai license fee into the bill took hold, and it obviously worked: state television took in an additional €1.09 billion in revenue. However, the decision was not at all appreciated by the European Commission who suggested several votes to separate the two things.

Everything seemed done with the Draghi government, all that remained was to implement the indications, until the Meloni government was elected and Minister Giorgetti received a letter from the trade union authorities of Rai employees: “The determination of the previous executive, following a specific resolution of Parliament, indicated the collection of the charge on the electricity bill among the abusive charges whose permanence will no longer be authorized from January 1, 2023. […] Depriving the country’s largest cultural enterprise of funding certainty, apart from the obvious job repercussions that could ensue, would have direct effects on the ministry itself headed by Ella, as a shareholder of Rai SpA “.
The Minister’s response was prompt and very telegraphic, as well as categorical: “The rumors of an exclusion of the Rai fee from the electricity bill are unfounded, given the lengthy preliminary work in Classes”.
