Canned tuna is one of those foods that can never be missing from the pantry of any Italian home. According to a market analysis carried out in recent months, 94% of Italian families buy canned tuna at least once a month, so that they never run out of it at home. It is a very popular food because it allows us to put a dish on the table even when we do not have much time or few ingredients available.

Its great versatility, its simple and delicate taste as well as its enormous cost have conquered millions of people to the point of consuming it at least once a week. But few know that eating canned tuna with this regularity could pose significant health risks. As with any food product, even then, before buying canned tuna, the label should be read carefully in order to realize the true ingredients of this food.

In recent months, many well-known brands that produce canned tuna have been questioned by consumers very often for highlighting some unpleasant facts. One of the many is the story that a British woman wanted to make public: the woman found an insect inside the can of tuna. Very frightened, she immediately took her mobile phone to document the event and, outraged, decided to share it on a well-known social network.

The news quickly spread around the world, causing fear and distrust of this food among many consumers. Soon, investigations and research began to understand what the origin of this insect was. Although the social media community was convinced it was Cymothoa exigua, experts quickly denied it. Cymothoa exigua is a parasite which, through the gills of the fish, penetrates there and settles in its mouth: its purpose is to immobilize the tongue of the animal by feeding on what the fish ingests.

Experts say that it is rather a louse belonging to a small species of crab in the form of a post-larva. If it is true that from each experience we must learn a lesson, from this moment we follow the advice that the many experts in the field constantly lavish on us: pay more attention to the labels of the food products that we intend to ‘buy, in order to realize the real constituents and avoid unpleasant situations like what happened to the woman.
