In partnership with the NBA, Marvel and ESPN – two Disney brands – are preparing a surprise for basketball and superhero fans. When Golden State Warriors X New Orleans Pelicans airs, Marvel will kick off Project NBA Special Edition: Marvel Arena of Heroes, an action that will bring a side story of Earth’s Mightiest Superheroes to the NBA Courts. In this story, the Avengers attempt to stop an alien invasion. To defeat them, they will need the help of the player who scores the most points in the game.

And since any help is welcome, the heroes will be watching some players from both teams. In Team Warriors, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins are the participants. In the Pelicans, giant Zion Williamson, Brandom Ingram and Lonzo Ball will be being evaluated by the Avengers. Each point, assist, bounce, steal, or strain will be worth a score called Marvel Hero Points. Likewise, infractions, errors in free throws, free throws and bad passes reduce these points. At the end of the game, the player with the most points will be considered the first NBA Special Edition Champion: Marvel Arena of Heroes.

In addition to this interactive storyline, the broadcast will include custom artwork and graphics, and heroes such as Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther will appear during the game using 3D technology. This is the first time in NBA history that such an action has made a themed game. However, this type of advertising is not new to the US market. In January of this year, Nickelodeon partnered with the NFL and did an animated SpongeBob SquarePants-themed football show. It’s a smart way to bring together audiences of different ages to promote both sport and productions.

And don’t think the game was chosen by chance. The Warriors and the Pelicans are vying for the last place in Play-In, which will lead to the playoffs of the season. The ESPN broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m. Brasilia time with the game at 8:30 p.m. The narration is by Rômulo Mendonça, with comments by Ricardo Bulgarelli and Luciano Amaral.
