A violent and bloody night: a featurette shows how Santa Claus becomes an action hero

Director Tommy Wirkola reveals what we should expect from the wild dark comedy starring David Harbor that oozes action, sarcasm and violence. A new behind-the-scenes featurette.

Santa Claus exists but he is not as the conventional imagination describes him. That’s precisely the subject of Netflix’s new Christmas movie, Violent Night, a violent and silent night, a bastard father but only when a gang of criminals ruins the New Year’s Eve party for a little girl from his “good” list. .

The trailer exudes brutality, as if Santa Claus were the villain: in a word, it’s exciting, especially for the subgenre of Christmas horror and violence films. In the role of the protagonist, we find David Harbour, who has always played for Netflix an emblematic character in Stranger Things, who slaughters the bad guys, like an avenger on the good side. Here are the actor’s words about his character: “He’s not a bad guy, he’s definitely a good guy but he’s lost a bit of faith in humanity and how they experience Christmas, blame it on consumerism etc.”.

A disillusioned Santa Claus therefore, weighed down by a new society deeply modified by capitalism and the consumerism that follows, determined to breathe the magic of Christmas with his fists.

The director, Tommy Wikola, revealed the subject of this horror comedy: “While delivering Christmas presents, Santa Claus is sucked into the life of this little girl’s family who is taken hostage in the evening Santa Claus then decides to help them because she never stopped believing in him and in Christmas. So he finds himself and his mind: punishing the criminals who are on his list of bad guys. reasons I won’t reveal, he’s a skilled warrior, he also has his favorite hammer called the Skull Crusher”.

The film therefore turns out to be a mixture of gore, irony and sarcasm but also lots and lots of action. A “comedy of good feelings”: “Santa Claus is a good boy and loves the little girl very much, he has a special bond with her and their relationship is very tender.” Speaking in place of David Harbor’s choice in the lead role, he said: “It was our first choice, we approached him offering him the part and luckily he liked it. And it was crazy. From that moment when we started talking to the writers with him, the story and the character just got better and better, it was great working with him, he’s obviously a great actor. and his suggestions, he really enriched the film”.

Universal decides to release it in December

The director, Tommy, is famous for films of this genre: in his filmography there are such names as Dead Snow and Dead Snow 2 in which Norwegian citizens face a squad of Nazi zombies in the snow in search of a treasure. However, he is not a director who only makes horror films. His latest work is indeed The Trip with Noomi Rapace, in which the actress and her husband are attacked by three fugitives: the film then takes the turn of a fight one against all to the death.

A violent and silent night is therefore an ideal Christmas film for those who love this time of year but are tired of the same old sugary and honeyed story. As the director himself tells us: “I say that as a Christmas lover. At home, near the North Cape, between December and January, it’s total darkness. The sun never rises, so at Christmas we spend a lot of time indoors with the fire on watching movies. I really think seeing a horror movie in the cinema is one of the best things in the world. To be scared and gasping in the middle of many other people, all together: there is no better feeling”.

A Quiet and Violent Night will be released in theaters by Universal on December 1.
