9 Things to Consider When Choosing Your Pillow Set for Your Living Room Space

Pillow Set

Choosing the right throw pillow set for your living room is an important decision that can affect both the aesthetic appeal and the comfort of your space. Pillows can add a pop of color, texture, and coziness to a room, making it feel more inviting and personal. However, with so many options available in terms of size, shape, material, and pattern, it can be overwhelming to select the perfect set. In this article, we will discuss the main things to consider when choosing your pillow set for your living room space.

1. Determine the Purpose of Your Pillows

Before purchasing pillows, consider their primary function in your living room. Are they going to be used for extra support and comfort when lounging on the couch, or are they primarily decorative elements to accentuate your interior design? If comfort is key, opt for pillows with a high-quality filling, such as down or a down-alternative. For purely decorative pillows, focus on the design and texture that complement your living room’s aesthetic.

2. Consider the Size and Scale

Pillows come in various sizes, and choosing the right scale is crucial for a harmonious look. Standard square pillows (18-24 inches) work well on most couches. If your furniture is oversized, larger pillows (24-30 inches) can make a bold statement without looking out of place. Conversely, smaller pillows (16 inches or less) may be better suited for accent chairs or smaller settees. It’s also important to consider the depth of your sofa; deep sofas can handle larger pillows, while shallow ones should be paired with smaller, less bulky options.

3. Shape and Number

The traditional square pillow is a classic choice, but incorporating different shapes can add visual interest. Rectangular lumbar pillows provide excellent back support and can break up the monotony of squares. Round pillows or bolsters can soften the lines of a very angular sofa. As for the number of pillows, an odd number is generally more visually appealing and looks more organic. For a standard sofa, three to five pillows is usually sufficient.

4. Fabric and Texture

The fabric of your pillows should reflect the mood and practicality of your living room. Luxurious materials like silk, velvet, or faux fur add a touch of sophistication and are best for low-traffic areas. More durable fabrics like cotton, linen, or wool are great for spaces used daily. Mixing textures can also add depth and interest; for example, combining smooth leather with a chunky knit or velvet can create a layered and inviting look.

5. Color and Pattern

Color is a powerful tool in design and can influence the atmosphere of a room. Choose pillow colors that complement the overall color scheme of your living room. You can go for a monochromatic look, use complementary colors for a pop, or choose analogous colors for a harmonious feel. When it comes to patterns, it’s important not to overwhelm the space. If your furniture or curtains are patterned, you might select solid pillows or those with a subtle design. If your larger pieces are solid, you can be bolder with pillow patterns.

6. Filling and Comfort

The filling of your pillows impacts both comfort and shape. Down-filled pillows are plush and luxurious, but they can be expensive and require fluffing to maintain their shape. Synthetic fills are hypoallergenic and often less costly, but they may not have the same softness as down. Memory foam can provide excellent support and retain shape well, but it might be too firm for some. Consider the comfort level you desire and any potential allergies when selecting pillow fillings.

7. Maintenance and Care

Think about the care required for your pillows. Removable covers are ideal as they can be easily taken off and washed. This is particularly important for pillows that will be used regularly. Look for durable, machine-washable fabrics if you don’t want the hassle of hand-washing or dry-cleaning. If you have pets or children, stain-resistant and durable fabrics should be at the top of your list.

8. Seasonality and Trends

Your pillow selection can be an excellent opportunity to change the look of your living room with the seasons or to update it according to current trends like the Brown pillow cover, without going for a complete overhaul. Lighter fabrics and brighter colors are perfect for spring and summer, while richer tones and heavier textures can cozy up space for fall and winter. Keep in mind that trends come and go; choose pillows that you love and that will stand the test of time for the mainstay, and have a few trendier pieces that you can switch out as styles change.

9. Budget

Set a budget before you begin shopping. Pillows can range from very affordable to quite expensive, especially when considering designer brands or custom-made options. Decide how much you are willing to spend and shop around to find the best deals that fit within your budget. Remember that investing in a few high-quality pillows might be more beneficial in the long run than buying several cheaper, lower-quality
