Moriarty
First place goes to Sherlock Holmes’ enemy number 1: Professor James Moriarty, the only opponent who approaches to kill him. Holmes describes Moriarty as the “Napoleon of crime”. But let’s try to reverse the point of view: what if Holmes was the real villain of the play and Moriarty the just defender of the oppressed working class in an industrial hell?
Saruman
Saruman the White appears at first glance to be jealous and arrogant in the Lord of the Rings saga, presenting himself as an enemy. In another more clever version, the character of Saruman is neither jealous nor ambitious but extremely practical. He recognizes that the best option for Middle-earth is to use the One Ring to bring Sauron to obedience, and if that doesn’t work, destroy him.
