The beaming summer sun is in full swing, and though it may seem a little early to be curating your perfect autumn winter closet, fashion enthusiasts know it takes time to get it right. Staying ahead of the game is key, and being prepared for the trends of the seasons to come can get you ahead of the race.
From the runways of New York, to the streets of London Fashion Week, fashion designers were busy making waves for this next season of AW23, last year. We all know the saying ‘by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail’, and that statement summarizes fashion, too.
If you can’t wait to see what your closet will look like for the new seasons coming up, then stay tuned, because we’ve explored all of London, Milan, Paris and New York and pulled out a curation of trends to beat the rest. So, get ready to take a sneak peek at five exciting trends that will dominate AW23.
Spotted everywhere, from Paco Rabanne’s catwalk, to Loewe, you can bet that pleats are adorning the streets wherever you look. The easiest way to upgrade any looks is to add texture, which is why the catwalks were covered in pleated garments. Never overcomplicating a look, a pleated item can come in the classic pleated flared pants, or a delicate pleated blouse. Make sure to never overcrowd layers, and to always let the pleats do the work; they’re fabulous alone.
Taking inspiration from the ultimate trailblazers in pleats, the first place to turn to for this trend is Issey Miyake. First exiting the doors for Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please collection in 1993, the patented process has been reenacted by every important brand to date. Whilst many men will be googling mustaches worth keeping during Movember, you’ll be reading fashion brands reviews on the hunt for a bargain pair of pleated flares; and we don’t blame you – it’s a trend worth shouting about.
Hello, 2010 called, they want their top back. Yes, you heard that right, Peplum is back. That shirt that everyone wore with the fitted silhouette and flared at the bottom is officially back on the fashion scene. Loved by some, hated by many, this trend has been spotted on AW23 catwalks by the likes of Bottega Veneta, Off-White, and many more. Not to be remembered as it ever was, this new era of peplum wants to make a stance, and it’s nothing like it was before.
The new generation of this trend wants to bring attention to your waist detail with delicate fabrics of fringe, silks, and layers. Brands like Proenza Schouler are channeling vintage corsets-turned peplum, and though they were outdated; this new era is making them oh-so-special.
If you haven’t heard this one harpering on all over your social media feeds, then where have you been? Think Sofia Richie’s new IT girl era, mix it with classic Chanel, non-printed designer bags, and luxurious basics that are overpriced, and you have the essence of quiet luxury. From Miu Miu, Bottega, to any designer out there; it’s been done by everyone far and wide. In a way to flex the ultra-rich status of the celebrity world, the flamboyance and logo-mania has been left in the past. Instantly recognizable designer prints and brand labels are a distant memory, and now the art of a classic and understated takes the stage. Classic pieces, beautiful fabrics and expensive, clean silhouettes form the basis for this trend, but it comes in all shapes and sizes. Try googling ‘quiet luxury hair’ or ‘quiet luxury makeup’ and you’ll see a plethora of options all ditching the world of logos and pairing back the world of fashion.
The bigger, the better, and this AW23 you will see bags of all sizes hitting the streets. Though we’re used to seeing the overused tote by Loewe, and Jacquemus all summer long, this trend of totes is going nowhere. Carry-all were seen in a supersize form, with clutches even being shown in extreme sizes. Long gone are the ultra mini crossbodies, and instead the era for the big bags is here. Thankfully carrying the kitchen sink has never been easier, as the likes of Balmain, and Jil Sander have come out with some perfect choices. Along with this, the classic Bottega, renowned for its ultra mini-Jodie bag last year, has come powering through to this new trend, with supersized versions that are obnoxiously brilliant.
Dress for success. The perfect trend for your very own ‘IT’ girl era. There has never been a better time to channel your inner girl boss with this one, as power suits adorned the AW23 catwalks everywhere. Athleisure and casual dress have slowly slipped away and has been channeled into a whole new muse: the wall street banker. In a move to a more gender fluid curation, the briefcase holding, braces wearing banker is the new trend around the block. Try ‘boyfriends blazer’ repping down the catwalk by David Koma, or McQueen’s pinstripe look; the era of power dressing is here, but in a new format. Take ‘it’s a man’s world’, spin it, and create ‘it’s a woman’s world, in a man’s suit’. It’s perfectly wall street chic, and we’re here for it.
