The film’s script was originally written for the protagonist to be none other than Western legend Clint Eastwood. However, as the project was shelved for many years, he eventually grew too old for the role, which was given to Will Smith.
TECHNOLOGY
The first version of the script arrived in the 90s, along with a technical team that tried to work on the project for Disney. However, they came to the conclusion that the technology of the time was not enough to make a film that had the younger version of the protagonist convincing. The challenge of making a realistic CGI face was too great. So, Disney ended up putting the project on hold until it finally sold it to Paramount.
SAVED BY MAGIC
Between 2003 and 2010, the name of Nicolas Cage was associated with an attempt to rescue this project which was almost canceled. However, in 2008 the actor ended up leaving the project to take part in O Aprendiz de Sorcerer (2010).
IN THE FAMILY
Will Smith spent years trying to land his son, Jaden Smith, as an actor in Hollywood, which clearly didn’t work out. But that didn’t stop him from supporting Pimpolho’s work and found a way to insert the song “Icon“, sung by Jaden, into the film’s second trailer.
PRINCE OF BEL AIR FRESH
One of the film’s great graces was the ability to have Will Smith face off against his younger self. And as you’d expect, the visual effects team based her look on the Um Maluco no Pedaço era, including the iconic haircut.
GUARUJA
The young Will Smith lookalike was played by actor Victor Hugo, who lives in London, but is Brazilian, born in Guarujá, São Paulo.
STUDIOUS
At the end of the film, the youngest Will is registered to study engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the famous MIT. In real life, Will turned down MIT to pursue his dream of becoming a rap star.
FRAMES
Upon release, the film was sold for its great technology and because it was shot at 120 frames per second, whereas most films only use 24 frames per second. This effect was called 3D+. This technology was so new and revolutionary that very few theaters in the world were able to show the film in the version recorded by the director.
REVOLUTIONARY
The film is directed by the great Ang Lee, famous for films that revolutionized filmmaking technology, such as Hulk (2003) and Life of Pi (2012). He must have seen the idea for the project and been interested. However, the result was far below expectations.
FLOPED
